Each month the Tom Joyner Foundation designates an HBCU to receive its support. The scholarship support money is sent directly to the HBCU for the students. The scholarships are awarded to the students through the Financial Aid Department at the HBCU based on financial need and other requirements from the school and the donor.

Over 39 years ago, Joseph “Scoop” Jones began publishing a weekly journal, chronicling the lives of Black New Orleanians, telling the stories that would not be told in the mainstream news journals and papers, but information which was important to him, and to his community.  Data News Weekly was born out of the midst of the turbulence of the Civil Rights Movement with it’s clear mission to be “The People’s Paper”.
Athletically, Southern continues it dominance as the unquestioned leader in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, winning the "Barbara Jacket/Sadie Magee Award" for tops among the women's sports, and tied Jackson State for the "C.D. Henry Award", signifying the top men's program, the during the 2004-05 athletic year. With this accomplishment, Southern was awarded the SWAC's coveted Dr. James Frank Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the conference's most outstanding athletic program, for the fourth consecutive year. In the 13-year history of the Commissioner's Cup, Southern's Department of Athletics has received this distinction of the SWAC's elite program 11 times.

KCOH Radio is the oldest black radio station in Texas as well as the southern portion of the United States. Established in 1953, KCOH began broadcasting from downtown Houston in the M&M building. In 1963, a new studio was built in Houston’s historic Third Ward and has been the home of KCOH ever since. Recognized as a forerunner in black radio stations for more than 50 years, KCOH was the first in the field to include talk show programming, gospel and many other types of shows with their urban listeners in mind.
